Community meeting - Prayer event

The South Africa community at ROCKHarbor met tonight for our monthly event. Keira hosted the event in the ROCKHarbor Library at 3080 Airway.  She created this prayer calendar for the month of January which will give you specific items to pray for as the team is in country.

January Team Commissioning

The January team was commissioned tonight at Third Wednesday tonight.  This is a monthly gathering for prayer at ROCKHarbor. The congregation gathers to pray for issues at the church, the local community and in this case the global teams that are leaving in January. Here are some pictures of the team (not everyone) as they were praying.

Prayer, Pizza and Purchase night

The South Africa community at ROCKHarbor gathered for our monthly event tonight. It was a prayer night where we gathered to pray for issues at the Academy, for the students to do well, for the staff at the academy, for Sweet Home and the CHEs who are working in Sweet Home and for the OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) in Sweet Home.

Afterwards we had Pizza then attended the ROCKHarbor event that allowed all of our global partners to sell items made in the communities where we work. Market of Hope was there to represent South Africa, specifically Phillipi and Sweet home have the beading business and the sewing business that has been slowly evolving in Sweet Home. The event was very well attended and Market Of Hope was very happy with the results and many people were able to help others while getting some very unique Christmas gifts.

Successful South Africa Week at ROCKHarbor

We just finished months of planning to put on South Africa weekend at ROCKHarbor this past weekend.

Here is the video that was played at service.

On Monday night we had about 30 people watch the move "Long Night's Journey Into Day" a documentary about the Truth and Reconciliation commission setup after Apartheid to bring forgiveness and reconciliation to all people of South Africa.

We also distributed over 2000 prayer cards for over 80 of the people we work with in South Africa. These are prayer sponsorships where we asked people to pray specifically for those in need or those who work directly with Bridges Of Hope.  Prayer is the most requested item we get and the ability to turn this over to thousands of people is a huge blessing.  Thanks for everyone who took a prayer card and continues to pray. If you would like a prayer card, we have a few extras, I could send you one.

We also had Dennis Wadley speak at a story and sharing night last night. I will try and get some pictures and post more about that in another post.

Cape Town (South Africa) - ANC President Jacob Zuma, who will within a few days be the country's president, is suing the Guardian newspaper and writer Simon Jenkins for a column saying South Africa should get used to Zuma's style of government - "morally contaminated, administratively chaotic and corrupt" and also - perhaps most legally damaging for Jenkins - calling him a "rapist" perhaps without realising he had been cleared by a court of the charges.

Perhaps Zuma's lawyers missed the article in the Daily Mail by Peter Hitchens asking British readers to imagine their feelings if their prime minister Gordon Brown "opened and closed his election rallies by bursting into a song called Bring Me My Machine Gun, swaying and jigging to the hypnotic chorus of this menacing ditty", also that Zuma was "alleged to be taking campaign money from Colonel Gaddafi; faced 783 counts of fraud, racketeering, tax evasion and corruption".

"If you can picture all this happening here, then you have an inkling of the horrible process South Africa is now going through. Except it is much, much worse."

Hitchens noted concerns that South Africa would "rapidly become a lawless kleptocracy when he comes to power, which he will do after a hopelessly one-sided and rather crooked election."

But not all the international commentary on Zuma becoming the next president is so gloomy, even in Britain, where criticism has generally been much harsher than in the US or elsewhere.

The Economist's latest editorial is balanced and hopeful, urging Zuma to "confound us all" and advising that "If Jacob Zuma avoids becoming a caricature of African leadership, he could change the whole continent for the better".

The journal lists Zuma's good points, calling him "undoubtedly a man of remarkable qualities," including the ability "in contrast to his dour predecessor, Thabo Mbeki [to] charm the birds out of the trees. Unlike the racially twitchy Mr Mbeki, he feels good in his skin, happy to acknowledge, even celebrate, his modest background".
