Its only been two days in South Africa, but God has been at work doing amazing things through our team! For the afternoon today, myself, Heather and Nicole got to spend 4 hours playing volleyball outside with the academy kids and i am not sure who enjoyed more, the kids or the three of us! The kids loved being outside learning a game that most of them have never played. As the groups came through our volleyball clinic, they were progressively getting better with the last group wanting to play against us 3. The highlight of the clinic was at the end when the Academy kids all came up to us and thanked us for teaching them volleyball and told us they had so much fun. Even though our days can become extremely long and tiring, hearing those kids tell us how much fun they had makes it all worth it.

We have such an amazing God that answers prayer in a big way. Today started out a little rough for Andrew and I. We have a great group of kids for our devotion group but we could not get them to participate and interact with us at all. Devotions are a forty-five minute discussion time that we have on the topics that the kids will be learning about later on in the day. After devotions, two of the team members get one grade to teach a series of lessons for a four hour period. As the teachers, it can be a daunting task to try to keep the students interested and interactive with our lessons. The lessons that Andrew and I teach are on respect and authority. Andrew and I were genuinely concerned about the day ahead of us because today was the day that we were scheduled to teach our devotion group for the four hour period. We could not even get them to participate for forty-five minutes, how in the world would we hold their attention for four hours?! Thankfully, we have a Big God that worries about the small things. After devotions, Wood prayed with Andrew and I about our upcoming class and it made such a big difference. When we began to teach the students, they all actively participated! We had volunteers to read, responses given, and questions asked. Apparently, the students were even telling other team members how much they learned in the authority class! It just shows that our God loves us so much. These students are such a blessing and my heart is filled with so much joy being back with them. So far this trip has been amazing and I can't wait to see the other ways that God is going to amaze and impress us. Thank you so much for all of your prayers and responses. It means the world to us to hear from everyone back home. Oh, and August team members that are reading this, I saw Eddie in Sweet Home yesterday. He's just as rambunctious as ever!! Thanks for all the love from everyone! We miss you!

Siobahnne here.

As you can see, it's been an amazing day for us today. By the end of yesterday we were feeling worn down. In our debrief time, we shared a lot of concerns about specific groups and kids and then really spent time praying as a group and on our own for a change. Already, these children have stolen pieces of our hearts, and we want to see them succeed and take to heart the purpose God has for them. Classes today seemed to go a lot better for everyone which was a true answer to prayer.

We also will have a bit of a treat for you when we get home. Today was the day that Jennifer and I taught a class on Poetry in the afternoon. I spent time putting together a packet of information on Biblical and Classical poetry forms as well as writing tips, but I also wanted to share some poetry with the kids. I picked four that really spoke to me and prayed the kids could see the beauty in them as well.

Each class was different. What ended up being so unexpected was the way that Jennifer and I reacted to the class. We've found in a lot of cases that the best way to get the kids to open up is to be willing to share things about yourself. As we went line by line through some of the poetry and what it means, it meant really opening up and sharing with the kids. There's a poem by John Donne about forgiveness. It talks of exposing layer after layer of sin, always waiting to hit upon the one sin where God just finally can't forgive us anymore. It required a lot of honesty, but the kids really understood and shared in that with us. It was incredible.

Each of the kids was then given a number that corresponded with what topic they would write about. They were given about 20 minutes at the end of the class to write a poem about a time they were angry at God, a time they praised God, a time they were in awe of God or a time they questioned God. The kids really opened up in their poetry and it was incredible the insight and the reflection we saw within their words. Their hearts are so amazingly big. While many of this kids kept their poems due to their personal nature, some willingly gave them to us to share with the team and to bring home to share with you. I know they will be treasured.

I think we all learned a lot about the kids today. There was so much laughter and so much joy... but we also learned of the pain behind the smile. Also, our Group One students wrote a poem they wanted to share with you!

We Love it Here at Bridges

We love it here where everyone smiles
Where the green grass goes on for miles

We love it because we get to swim
We also like to play in the gym

We can play on the trampoline with friends
The fun here never ends!

- Group One: Onele, Zimkhitha, Zintle, Nontando, Nomfundo, Zenande, Nongamso, and Asemahle.

Pretty awesome, right?

Thank you so much for all your prayers!

As always, keep praying to keep the spiders away! Pray for continued endurance and for God to reveal himself even more. We saw a lot of God in these kids today and I know we all ache to be even closer to our Heavenly Father. He's stretching us and growing us, so please pray that we are taking care and resting when we need to. Pray for health and please pray for these kids! They all have to go back home for the weekend on Friday, and we're praying they return safely on Monday to start their official first day back at school. Thank you for being our prayer warriors! You've helped bless us so much!

  1. I am sitting here in tears. The tears are of joy and just plain longing to be with them again. I love those kids. Thanks for posting the poem and the kids that wrote it. :) We miss them so much. It is such a joy to hear how much you are falling in love with them.

Great post, Andrew, even though it is so tiring it is so worth it.

It's sounds like you are all really open to God and His Spirit. That definitely gets you farther than any plan.

Tanya, I love that you saw Eddie!

Today we leave you the story of Solomon that came to mind after reading your post.

"'Now, LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?'

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this."
    1 Kings 3:7-10

Continue to ask God for that discerning heart. We're praying for all of you!

  3. Like Keira, your posts have been such a treat to read so far! Playing, prayer, and poetry, such rich days there, that I can only hope all of you will bring back home. The kids are right, "The fun here never ends!" I simply cannot wait to see how God uses this journey to break you, mold you, and change you, it is such a joyous thing.

Pleeeeeease, take lots of video of 'Crazy' Eddie! Ha!

Happy Birthday TANYA! I hope you get thrown in the pool! :)

There are a ton of people praying for each one of you, the Bridges staff, and the kids too. Including you guys!!

Let each one of us thank our Father God for when I need hope, You are my Hope. When I am weak, You are my Strength. When I am weary, You are my Resting Place. When I need freedom, You are my Deliverer. When I want guidance, You are my Counselor. When I need healing, You are my Healer. When I seek protection, You are my Shield. When I am going through a difficult time, You are my Stronghold in the Day of Trouble.

  4. Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to Tanya, Happy Birthday to you.
I can't believe that you are so far away form us on your birthday. We miss you so much, but we are so excited to see how God is working in your life. You are right, He is a big God and He is concerned about the little things. It is awesome to see how He is working and answering all our prayers. A spirit led and anointed life can change an ordinary job, an ordinary day into an extraordinary life changing event. It is exciting for us to witness how God is doing this in each one of your lives as we read your postings each day. It means so much to us here at home. It feels like we are apart of this life changing experience with all of you. We continuously pray for you and the children. We are so thankful to each of you for answering God's call.

Tanya, we are so proud of you. It is hard not having you here for your b-day, but we know you are exactly where our Heavenly Father wants you to be. We love you so much and are counting the days until you are back home with us. Stay safe and healthy. Love, Mom and Dad

P.S. We are praying God keeps the spiders and cobras away. :)

Continue to be open to the spirit and let Him guide every lesson, conversation, sport activity, etc... praying for health and strength...

  7. So powerful, thank you guys for sharing your struggles, yet ongoing triumphs. It is so satisfying to hear that you can see tangible signs of God's movement already! So glad to hear that your team is praying so much! For some reason (many of which can be explored later) it seems that God's voice is much louder and clearer on the missions field. Almost as if other frequencies have faded away, and the more you rely on Him, the clearer His voice becomes. Lean into that. Hear and do.

The poem was wonderful! Please keep posting poems from the kids, we love to read them back here! Sio, I know you are doing such a great job! The poems would be great to share with the RH writing team!

Great to hear about Eddie running around too! He needs a lot of love and care. Any word on Sinotemba? Not sure how to spell his name but he was the little boy who wore the red and black transformers shirt everyday in Sweet Home as I recall.

Have a good nights sleep everyone. It is with heart-felt sincerity that we thank you for the huge sacrifice and good work that you all are choosing to do. The Lord is SO proud of you!

  8. Happy Birthday TANYA!!! It sounds like you guys are having such an awesome start to your trip. I am so glad to see God working though each one of you. PRAY PRAY PRAY! I am so glad that Wood was able to pray for your guys after your Devo group. I know how daunting those can be, especially when you think the kids aren't responding to what you are talking about. trust me when i say the kids here EVERYTHING you are saying. Take time out of your day to really open up to then kids. LIke Sio said in her last post, if you open up to them, they will open up to you. Put all of your trust in God. He will provide everything you need on this journey. Again HAPPY B-DAY Tanya. TRY TO STAY DRY!

  9. I could just say ditto to everything everyone's already posted!! It's so amazing to see our community so alive and at work....even on the other side of oceans and oceans, we're connected! Love it, love your posts, and so stoked for what God's up to!!!

Last night I was reflecting on how so many things are so, so different at Bridges from when we were even there 6 months ago (God was working me through anxiety I was having on behalf of all of you!), and just how significant the demands that have been placed on you are....I hope you all know that you are pioneering, the torchbearers of a new era of things at Bridges...and that is something truly special. To be there, managing life with 50 kids just off a long break, having to be house parents & do kitchen duty, pouring into them as we can tell you are, with a Bridges staff in transition (who hasn't yet become the well-oiled machine we are used to) is such a testament to your strength and trust in God....we are incredibly proud to be in ministry with you! As we were preparing, choosing you guys as a team, and training, I had a deep seeded feeling that you were a strong group and that much was going to be asked of you on your trip, unique and gifted in your own ways...and to hear such joy in your posts makes me praise God all the more! Hopefully you can hear these encouragements and smile....:) God is beyond pleased with you, and I hope you can feel his joy in you this evening....

Today's Psalm in my readings was Psalm 23...I specifically thought of you all when I read "he leads me by still waters, he restores my soul"...I pray that you each get a few moments, even, to allow God to still you and restore you...find a special spot (mine was on the trampoline, listening to the water in the pond) and grab a few minutes and let God speak to you...it seems that he shouts in Africa, and when you return, you will long to hear his voice as loudly as you did there...

We love you all!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TANYA!!!

    Lots of love,
    Emily :)

  11. I forgot two things....

    1. I'm still on spider prayer duty!!!
    2. Give Steph big hugs when she arrives today/tomorrow/whenever you see her...she is so stoked to be arriving while an RH team is there (we were so excited, as her church and ministry family, to get to send her off with prayer and fun the other night, and the fact that you are there to receive her back to SA is so incredible and well-orchestrated by God!)

  12. Happy Birthday to Tanya indeed! I hope that you have survived any sort of water torture the children may have joyfully inflicted onto you today. ;)

As Em said, you really are there paving the way and setting the tone for the start of this school year. So, thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for being willing to go above and beyond in times when you might be tired or uncertain about what to do or say. Thank you for being flexible and for adapting to what has or has not been given to you. Thank you for being there for the kids as they go through this transition and loving on them whether it be through playing volleyball or listening to them read their poems (Side note-I can't wait to hear them. They are quite insightful and powerful).

You are all amazing. I pray that God continues to pour His love into each of you, and that it overflows into everything you do. As this day ends and the next one unfolds, I pray this for you too.

"May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word." II Thessalonians 2:16-17
